Grieving for Ourself

Updated: Jun 12

Beyond Survival with Natalie Harris

When we think about grief, we often think about the loss of another person. Much less often do we talk about grieving the loss of a role, identity, career, lifestyle, or future we once imagined for ourselves.

For many people working in high-performance, service-oriented, or helping professions, identity becomes deeply connected to what they do. The work matters. The purpose matters. The relationships matter. Over time, the role can become part of how we understand ourselves and our place in the world.

When circumstances change through retirement, illness, injury, burnout, recovery, career transition, or major life events, people are often left navigating a form of grief that is rarely discussed openly.

This conversation is especially relevant to the Human Behind The Responder community because it explores the often-overlooked reality that behind every title, uniform, achievement, and role is a human being who continues to evolve throughout life.

In this episode of Beyond Survival, Natalie Harris explores the experience of grieving former versions of ourselves, the identities we once held, and the futures we once expected. She shares her own journey of navigating life beyond a professional identity she loved and discusses how grief and growth often coexist during periods of transition.

This episode is not about letting go of who you were.

It is about learning how to honour who you were while making space for who you are becoming.
